Buffalo Hump: What It Is and How to Treat It

Up to 79% of Americans feel unsatisfied with how their bodies look. Some wish they were a few pounds lighter, while others struggle with body contouring issues like excessive abdominal fat or having a buffalo hump.

Excess fat behind the neck not only affects your appearance but can also cause pain and restrict your movement. If you are struggling with a buffalo hump, it can help to know what it is and how to treat it. Read on to learn more about the buffalo hump and how we can help.

What Is a Buffalo Hump?

The buffalo hump (dorsocervical fat pad) is a fat accumulation behind the neck that develops into a hump.

A buffalo hump is often associated with the bad posture that comes from sitting with your head forward. Slouching for hours at a time can lead the body to protect the spine by developing a fat pad.

Other factors that can increase the chances of developing a buffalo hump are:

  • Obesity
  • Use of corticosteroids
  • Use of medications to treat HIV/AIDS
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Madelung’s disease
  • Tumors

Most buffalo humps are not harmful, though there are instances when they can point to underlying health concerns. Some people feel pain and discomfort from a dorsocervical fat pad, finding it difficult to move their head and neck.

Buffalo Hump Treatment with Precision Sculpt

Once the fat has hardened enough to become a buffalo hump, diet and exercise will no longer be able to improve it. There are surgical options, but if you are looking for a less invasive treatment than traditional liposuction, Precision Sculpt is the choice.

Precision Sculpt is a buffalo hump removal treatment we developed in our Beverly Hills, CA, clinic. It combines laser technology with liposuction, offering advanced and artistic body liposuctioning results.

At Ideal Face & Body, we use a state-of-the-art gentle numbing device to apply local anesthesia before the procedure. During treatment, we will place you on a specialized pillow that gives our surgeons better access to your upper back, maximizing the effectiveness of the process.

We use a laser to soften the hardened fat in the hump and then gently make a small incision. With this incision and tailored air-powered microcannulas, we remove the fat.

Using the Smartlipo laser and cold helium radiofrequency, we then reshape and tighten the skin and soft tissues to enhance the contour of the area.

The entire buffalo hump removal process takes no longer than four hours.

Benefits of Precision Sculpt for Buffalo Hump Removal

Precision Sculpt is a more effective buffalo hump treatment than most traditional methods.

In contrast to some other fat removal procedures, Precision Sculpt is gentle. It does not require general anesthesia, which helps avoid complications and speeds up the recovery process.

For patients with underlying health conditions that make general anesthesia impossible, knowing we only use a local numbing device gives them the confidence to finally get the treatment they want.

With only local anesthesia, you also do not have to stay overnight at the hospital or take weeks off work to recover. Precision Sculpt allows you to leave the clinic at the end of the procedure and get back to your normal life within a few days.

You can expect to start seeing results quickly. And since the procedure removes the fat cells in the problem area, most people do not have to worry about their hump returning.

Good Candidates for Precision Sculpt

Most people who suffer from dorsocervical fat are good candidates for Precision Sculpt. The best candidates are those who have addressed the cause of the buffalo hump, including making necessary changes to their lifestyle if obesity was the problem.

Because Precision Sculpt is not a weight-loss treatment, we work with patients who have good diet and exercise habits.

You must also be in good health. We advise that people who are pregnant or breastfeeding wait to undergo the procedure.

What to Expect from the Procedure

We will begin by taking a full medical history. Let us know if you use medications or supplements or have allergies, high blood pressure, or difficulties clotting. To prepare for the treatment, we will ask you to avoid alcohol for at least a week before and to abstain for a week after. If you smoke, stop doing so at least four weeks before treatment.

We will ask you to moderate your salt intake, as well, and to not take ibuprofen or aspirin for a couple of weeks before.

At Ideal Face & Body, we perform Precision Sculpt in our private offices. We will take pictures and map the areas we will treat, always reviewing everything with you, and then perform the procedure. It usually takes one to four hours, depending on the number of areas treated.

Some patients choose to use the fat extracted from the buffalo hump to enhance other locations like the breasts, buttocks, hands, and face. We will happily discuss these options with you.

After the procedure, you will be able to walk and perform mild movements, but you should avoid anything too strenuous for at least two weeks. Bring someone to the procedure to drive you home.
