What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift? 13 Facts and Benefits Explained

A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world. It is also one of the most commonly requested procedures at Ideal Face and Body in Beverly Hills, CA. To help you determine if this incredibly popular procedure could benefit you, we’d like to talk to you today about a dozen key facts and benefits that everyone should know about it.

12 Key Facts and Benefits About a Brazilian Butt Lift Explained

1. It Is Unlike Any Other Lift

The most important fact you have to understand about a Brazilian butt lift is that it is unlike any other lift. Other lifts, like an arm lift or breast lift, involve the excision of excess fat, the removal of any excess skin that may be in the area and the surgical tightening of the remaining skin. With this procedure, the appearance of skin lifting comes from adding volume to the buttocks.

2. It Is Virtually an All-in-One Solution to Contouring Issues

The most important benefit you need to understand about this procedure is that it is virtually an all-in-one solution to your contour concerns. If you’re worried about your upper arms being a bit too soft, excess fat can be removed from your upper arms. This removed fat will be cleaned and the healthiest cells will be implanted into the buttocks.

This procedure improves the proportions of your upper and lower body simultaneously. It also helps the buttocks appear younger and fuller and makes the skin appear lifted. If you have ever wished you could augment your buttocks without implanting plastic and remove excess fat from one or more parts of your body, this may be the procedure for you.

3. It All Starts With an Initial Consultation

While this procedure enhances the contours of several regions of the body at once, it’s not right for everyone. If you think this sounds like something you’d like to consider, you need to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Justin Yovino, MD, FACS. During this initial consultation, he will first review your medical history and assess your current health to ensure you are healthy enough for this procedure.

If you are healthy enough for this procedure, he will then assess your buttocks to determine how much fat needs to be transferred to improve the appearance of the buttocks and skin. Next, he will assess the regions of your body that you identify as needing fat removal. If you’re concerned about one large area with lots of excess fat, liposuction may only need to be performed in one area.

4. After That Initial Consultation, It’s Time to Prepare for Your Procedure

If Dr. Yovino determines that this procedure is right for you, it becomes time to prepare for your procedure. In the six weeks leading up to your procedure, stop consuming tobacco products and alcohol. In the 72 hours leading up to your procedure, stop taking NSAIDs and any other drugs or supplements that affect blood viscosity.

Dr. Yovino will determine the best way to keep you comfortable when he reviews your health during your initial consultation. If you will receive general anesthesia, you should fast for the 12 hours leading up to your procedure. It is okay to take a sip of water if you need water to take medication. If you’re worried about fasting for 12 hours, schedule your procedure for early in the morning and eat a healthy, filling snack at 8 PM.

5. You Should Also Be Preparing for Your Recovery

While you’re preparing for your procedure, you should also be preparing for your recovery process. One of the most important steps of preparing for your recovery process is to set up a recovery room. We’ll get into this in more depth in just a minute. You should also prepare your meals for the week following your procedure. Since there’s a good chance that you won’t want to cook, make and freeze or refrigerate meals that are nutritious and reheat well.

If possible, arrange for a loved one to stay at home with you during the first week after your procedure. You will be tired, and your sole focus should be on rest. If you have children, do your best to explain to them that you need them to be independent for the next couple of weeks or they need to ask someone else for help. If you have a pet that weighs at least 10 pounds, you will not be able to pick him or her up for the first several weeks post-op.

6. Preparing Your Recovery Room Is Easy Enough

While preparing your recovery room is crucial, it isn’t hard to do. Among the things that should be in your recovery room are prescription painkillers, prescription antibiotics and plenty of water bottles. Set up your room so you can be comfortable and have activities within reach that will keep your mind occupied without requiring too much bandwidth.

Remember, you will be drowsy after your procedure and the most important thing for you to do is rest. It is not the best time to play multi-player video games or watch the latest episodes of your favorite TV shows. We recommend buying a word or number puzzle book or downloading a puzzle app on your tablet or smartphone. Just know that you may need to take frequent breaks to turn your mind off for a bit.

7. You Will Definitely Need Someone to Stay With You for the First 24 Hours Post-Op

Regardless of whether you have someone to stay with you for the first full week after your procedure, you need someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours post-op. Another incredibly compelling benefit of this procedure is there is no pain or discomfort. This is because we administer general anesthesia before the procedure begins.

However, you cannot drive within 24 hours of receiving general anesthesia. This also holds true for local anesthesia combined with sedation, although anesthesia combined with sedation isn’t a common choice for this procedure. Since you can’t drive home, we strongly recommend having a loved one drive you to and from the procedure. That way, you don’t have to worry about how to get your personal vehicle home after the procedure.

8. A Great Deal of Excess Fat Will Be Removed

Another really exciting benefit of this procedure is that it is very effective at the removal of excess fat. To remove excess fat for the transfer process, liposuction is used, a procedure that has been known for decades as the gold standard of fat removal. Depending on the size of the region fat is being removed from and the amount of excess fat in the targeted region, anywhere from 24 to 80% of excess fat may be removed.

9. You Can Remove Excess Fat From Several Regions of the Body During This Procedure

Another really exciting thing about this procedure is that you can remove excess fat from several parts of your body during it. We most commonly remove excess fat from large areas of the body, like the stomach, lower back, middle back, hips or sides. However, you can also have excess fat removed from smaller regions of the body, like the underarms, the backs of the knees, the calves and the upper arms to enhance the contours of those parts of the body.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Yovino will review the size of the fat deposits in various trouble regions and determine if there is enough fat for removal. Typically, he looks for at least an inch of pinchable fat, but he can also work with areas with less excess fat. He will also assess the health of your skin in your targeted regions to ensure it is adequate for liposuction.

10. Your Recovery Won’t Take Very Long

Since a Brazilian butt lift is essentially two procedures in one (liposuction and a fat transfer), many people worry about how long the recovery process lasts. Luckily, it doesn’t last as long as you probably think. Most people find that their recovery process lasts only six weeks. This is par for the course for cosmetic procedures and holds true regardless of how many areas you have fat removed from.

The most difficult part of the recovery process is the first two weeks post-op. During this time, you’ll need to use a BBL pillow designed specifically to keep pressure off of your buttocks. If you don’t want to buy such a pillow, you can use a cushion, throw pillow or bed pillow. Your buttocks should hang over the back of the pillow or cushion, ensuring pressure from your body weight is transferred to your thighs.

11. The Results Are Considered Permanent

Yet another incredibly exciting benefit of this procedure is that the results are considered permanent. The results of liposuction will last forever; your body cannot grow new fat cells, so there are forever fewer fat cells in the treatment area. Regarding the results of the transfer part of the process, they are fairly permanent, but volume loss can occur with age. Luckily, you won’t have to worry about this for at least a decade.

12. There Are Steps You Can Take to Extend the Results of the Fat Transfer

We can’t tell you for sure how your weight will change as you age. It’s not uncommon for people to experience a significantly decreased appetite as they age. What we can tell you, however, is how to set yourself up for success and increase the chance of long-lasting fat transfer results.

To increase your chances of enjoying your full-fat transfer results for at least a decade to come, maintain your weight for the first six months post-op. You are encouraged to walk at a moderate pace during the first couple of weeks post-op. After that, you can slowly ramp up your workout routine; just be sure to eat plenty of calories on the days that you work out.
