What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), and how does it work?

The sun prematurely ages your skin, which can make you look much older than you actually are. IPL works to reverse this damage, restoring your bright and youthful appearance. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a device that uses non-invasive light wavelengths to target imperfections in the skin such as hyperpigmentation and crepiness. It is different from a laser treatment – IPL is considered to be a lower-risk procedure for all skin types and tones, as the light is emitted in scattered flashes. The melanin in your skin absorbs the heat from the IPL flashes, destroying unwanted pigment (such as freckles). In addition to treating sun-damaged skin, IPL can also be used to remove unwanted hair, broken capillaries and rosacea, and treat active acne breakouts.

The IPL device we use in our Beverly Hills office is the Lumenis M22™, which uses Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™).

What is sun damage?

Sun damage can be caused by both UVA and UVB rays. This damage can look like:

  • Brown spots
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients achieve the best result from multiple IPL treatments that are spaced 1-6 weeks apart. At your consultation, we will develop a personalized treatment plan so you know exactly what to expect.
